We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.

2 Corinthians 5:20

The Sports Ministry at Barrs Mill began in the summer of 1998 when a few members decided to pull together and join a church softball league in Coshocton. From those few people and that very small beginning, a great ministry was born. Since then, Barrs Mill has become active in an array of activities and leagues including volleyball, softball, basketball, and flag football. The Sports Ministry's main goal is the Christian fellowship that can come from athletics.

Barrs Mill has participated in all three church volleyball leagues in Dover at one point or another. Dover's Memorial Hall is the gym where the Women's, Men and Co-Ed leagues are played. These leagues begin in late autumn and run until the beginning of spring. The volleyball leagues are competitive, but the teams understand the true meaning behind the competition. As the volleyball season ends, spring training begins for the softball team. The softball team also plays most of its games in the Dover Church League. Each team plays approximately fifteen regular season games from May until August and then moves on to tournaments.

The softball team, as with the other teams at Barrs Mill, invites everyone to play and is always happy to welcome new members. Players of all different skill levels are able to come together for fun competition and Christian fellowship. The main goal for all players involved is spiritual growth that comes from the competition. The congregation, seeing and understanding the importance of the sports ministry, built a beautiful softball field on the grounds of the church. The field is used not only by our ministry, but also by local little league teams and other organizations. The field, which may seem too good to be true, is surrounded by fencing with dugout areas and a well manicured surface. It may be considered one of the nicest softball fields in the county. We are very blessed to have this addition to our ministry.

The Sports Ministry is actively involved in the Dream League ministry. We recognize that the opportunity to help the special needs members of our community, far eclipses anything that we have been doing. The Dream League games are played on Wednesday nights in July and August. All the games are played on our church's softball field. The games are accompanied with food and a short devotion for the players and their families. The season ends with a ceremony where each player receives an award. We are blessed to have the chance to make a difference for so many.
